BC Bargaining Update – September 7, 2014

Two days of negotiations were held with the Company this past week on Thursday Sept 4th and Friday September 5th.

As you are aware, the Company has made an application to move negotiations to conciliation at the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services (FMCS) where the discussions will continue under the auspices of a mediator.

Our priority for these negotiations is to achieve a fair collective agreement that makes improvements to our benefits and premiums, narrows the wage gap for our members in the Okanagan, keeps pace with the cost of living, and provides for fairness in times of transition. The people who contribute to making Global TV successful and profitable should have the stability of a job that helps them to support their families.

The Company has not yet responded to our monetary proposal (wages, benefits and premiums) and their proposals contain some provisions that would be a step backwards related to our current working conditions. These include proposals to:

  • Modify the posting procedures and qualifications for vacancies and promotions
  • Change the threshold for moving from temporary to part time employee status
  • Increase the use of temporary and contract employees

The Company proposals also include the use of Shaw TV content from the Metro Vancouver area.

General Membership Meetings are being scheduled for the week of September 15th for M1 Vancouver and M1 Okanagan where an update on the negotiations will be provided.

This week Local M1 Bargaining Committee members are available to meet with you during break times.

As always it is our solidarity that will enable us to achieve a fair collective agreement. Thank you for your support.
